So it is that time of the year again- you know what I am talking about! That day; its starts with a V- the day when you see men carrying flowers to give their loved ones, when the doors are flung open for some lucky women, when the entire woman race wears red to celebrate the love in their lives. For you, it is the most dreadful holiday of the year- the only one which reminds you how alone you are. The single women working in offices have probably submitted their leave requests (who wants to go through all that torture?), or are planning to call in sick. Some, who love their money and won’t miss work for anything, have ordered flowers to be delivered at their workplace. You know how the drill goes. The delivery man walks in with two dozen roses and asks for you. You pretend to be oblivious to what is going on, and when he calls your name, your jaw drops like you are so shocked! You pretend to wonder who it is from because as far as you are concerned, you haven’t said yes to anyone yet. And so the drama goes on and on… For some sisters, this is the seventh time you are doing this, so you have become a pro at this game. Do I sound like an expert? – Well, maybe I have a “friend” who has done this a time or two or three or four… So I kind of know this game too!
Today’s message is for single ladies who haven’t had someone “put a ring on it.” Don’t get happy just yet. I am not going to comfort you with the “No good thing does he withhold from those he loves” sermon. Not this time ladies. I want to bring out some logic and just reason with you a little bit. Let’s just say, I am at the “come let us reason together” place. Ladies, do you become more of a woman when you carry a red rose on Valentine’s Day? Is your worth measured by the man standing next to you, so that if you have one, you are worthy, but if not, you are half a lady? Is your calling into the kingdom of God complete when a man asks you out? Did Jesus even give this kind of command to any woman anyway? That “Go and find yourself a man and sin no more?” Can one day of the year define who you are, so that you depress and feel less of a person just because no one has asked you out yet?
You might be thinking I am being really hard on singles, but I if women of this generation will become conquerors, we must arm ourselves with knowledge. Many women in the bible were used just as they were, without any man in their lives. Remember Deborah, a judge in the nation of Israel. Accepted by the Lord, trusted by people. What about Rehab, despised by the people because of her job, but accepted by the Lord because of her faith. And the story goes on. The slave girl who worked for Naaman, the widow at Zerapheth, Mary Magdalene, the woman at the well, the woman who touched Jesus cloak and many others.
The world will portray you as single and forsaken. They have names to call you depending on your age if you are still single. Media will advertise lots of items as “must-haves” for those who are “in love”. But I want to point out to you that there is one who loves you all year round, who wakes you up every morning with new mercies. One that promises to love you till the end of time. One who loved you to death- literally. God tells us in Jeremiah 31: 13
“ …. “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness.”
God’s love never abandons, never hurts, never fails, never gives up, and is never conditional. God’s love is everlasting! So this Valentine’s day, know that you are loved and that your father in heaven thinks highly of you.
I know this might sound very cliché to some people, but I pray that single ladies of this generation are known for their resilience and better still, for their knowledge of the truths of God. In the past, women were defined by culture, and sure enough women who were single or without children were looked down upon culturally. But we are of those who know the truth- and this truth has set us free. Romans 8:1 says “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,” You are not condemned my sister, God loves you just the way you are and in his time, he will make all things beautiful.
So this Valentines Day, all the single ladies hold your heads up and keep working for the master. You are precious and you are loved 365 days a year, 24/7 all the time. When God looks at you, he says “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you…..” Don’t look at yourself any differently. So, all the single ladies my message to you this year is YOU ARE LOVED! Period.
