“Give me the measurements for a standard ear, so I can know how close or far off mine is,” were the words of a visiting pastor who blessed us with a life changing sermon in church this last Sunday. He was talking about his insecurities as a young man, growing up in an average household that struggled. He was tall and skinny, and felt his ears were too big. He grew his hair into an afro to cover his ears, so they didn’t look too big. One day, he met a young man who suffered the same predicament and that became the turning point of this pastor’s life. He realized that he did not have any basis of feeling insecure because no one could tell or give the measurements of a supposedly perfect ear, so his ear was okay after all! That became a freeing moment for me too as I have struggled with weight ever since I was a small girl. In my head I thought to myself, “What are the measurements of a perfect woman, what is the perfect size?”- Please do not give me the Hollywood standard because it has changed on a yearly basis depending on the star that is topping the charts! At one time it was curvy when Jennifer Lopez hit the charts, then it was some very skinny stars, then came Beyonce’ with her curves, and now I guess its skinny again. I am talking about what God said is perfect- and his word never changes. His word says in Psalm 139:13-46 says
“For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,
your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me
were written in your book
before one of them came to be”. – NIV
So many of us women (and men) are walking around with insecurities because of the way we look. For many it is weight; either you feel too fat or too thin. For others, it is different parts of the body, maybe like the preacher, you think your ears are too big, for others it may be the size of your head, the size of your eyes, the size of your lips, the size of your thighs, legs or whatever it may be. When King David struggled with his insecurities, he found freedom when he looked at himself through the eyes of his maker. He says “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” And so are you! God has a purpose for each of us. Trying to be some one else can be really tough. We are not wired as they are, we haven’t had their experiences, we have no clue what makes them who they are, and here we are trying to be like them! And you know what’s funny is that, they too are trying to be like other people! With that said, can the real whoever you are please stand up?
To cut the long story short, I just want to encourage all sisters out there to embrace the uniqueness that God has created you with. Instead of looking at our differences as shortcomings, we need to view ourselves as master pieces that God prides himself in creating. That way, our joy will be full, our stress levels will go down, we will accept one another just the way we are and our lives will be fruitful in every aspect! Just remember this if you forget everything else- “You are beautiful in the eyes of the maker. He knew exactly what unique aspects he would create in you and after he was done creating you, he took a deep breath and said you were beautiful!” The world may not appreciate you, but encourage yourself in the Lord and trust him to accomplish the beautiful plan he has for your life. In the end, it will be well with you. Feel free to be yourself at last!
